Backlit Displays

Backlit Display systems enhance graphics by illuminating the image from behind, thus displaying the image more clearly. They are typically used in airports, department stores and as directories in shopping malls.

Creating a quality backlit display is more involved than simply imaging to film and placing in a light box. Large backlit displays need the image to be supported so it will not sag or become wavy. The recommended way to do this is to mount the image face down using an optically clear mounting adhesive to a clear substrate i.e. plexiglass or Lexan.

This technique allows the image to be viewed through the substrate and is similar to viewing a picture that is in a frame with glass over it.

Note: using an adhesive with UV protection is recommended to prevent image fade.

The SEAL Backlit Solution produces outstanding performance for high quality backlit displays.

How to Produce
This application requires a two-pass process through a roller laminator, using an over-laminating film, a mounting adhesive and a clear substrate i.e. plexiglass

  1. Apply optically clear adhesive to the acrylic sheet
  2. Mount to substrate (acrylic sheet)
  3. Trim print to size

Using front print media

Step 1 - Decaling the image
  1. Load your over-laminating film on the top supply shaft and adhesive on the bottom supply shaft of your laminator.
  2. Check your recommended machine settings
  3. Slowly insert the image into the laminator

Step 2 - Mounting
  1. Trim your image to match the size of your substrate.
  2. Place your image face up onto the substrate.
  3. Peel back and fold over approximately 1-2” of your release liner along the top of the image.
  4. Turn your image back over so it is face down and align the leading edge to the substrate and tack the exposed adhesive to the substrate.
  5. Set the nip on your laminator to match the thickness of your substrate.
  6. Insert the leading edge you tacked down into the nip of the laminator.
  7. Lay your decal up and over the top roller.
  8. Select a comfortable speed (approx 2-3 feet/minute) on your laminator and depress the foot pedal to advance the substrate and decal into the machine while removing the release liner.
  9. Trim your substrate if required.

Application Notes

Adhesion Compatibility - Ink chemistry varies significantly according to different print technologies and can affect compatibility of the adhesive from the laminating film to the surface of the printed media. We would advise that you take a small sample and do an adhesion test to make sure you have good adhesion between the printed surface and adhesive before producing your product.

Please refer to product data sheets for process setting and running conditions.
